Georgina, Dudley's favourite vet, phoned us late this afternoon with his pathology results.
Using fancy speak it was a melanocytoma - basically a melanoma, which thank goodness is benign. The wound is so big as they took away a fair bit of margin around it and the borders of that are totally clear. I'm so relieved and yet stunned - melanoma was my worst unspoken fear, and possibly theirs, and of course it's wonderful that it's benign/hasn't spread.
From the rapid bit of Googling I've done it seems to often stem from a hair follicle if it's on the dog's tummy or such and also it tends to affect dogs under one year old. Exactly Dudley's visual symptoms and around his age group.
We apparently did really well to jump to attention and get him to the vet when we did and will both be giving him an even more thorough check at least once a week, although with luck he should sail merrily through to old age.
Of course, he'll lie on his back and absolutely love being stroked! Hooray for Dudley - a positive result and he's also 'positively' delighted at the prospect of being fondled even more than usual.
Which takes us full circle - as that's exactly how Len initially found it in the first place!
And the little chap? Fast asleep and totally oblivious here with his head on one of my slippers, with my foot inside, so he knows if I move away from the desk!
With grateful thanks for all your positive thoughts for this happy outcome, and a happy albeit unknowing woofle from Dudley.
Much love,
Wonderful news, Di! xx
ReplyDeleteSo, so glad you caught it early & the margins are clear! Early Christmas present, for sure! Happy Holidays to all 3 of you!
ReplyDeleteWonderful news Di, have a relaxing break at Christmas, Cathy xx
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to hear about the clear margins :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful news, and I can reassure you that now it's gone it's gone for good, because Mark had one removed from his back a few years ago (not discovered when he was lying on his back having his tummy tickled, though!) and has had no sign of a recurrence.

ReplyDeleteSo happy you and Len discovered it early and that the procedure ended with happy news! I was thinking about little Dudley last night and wondering if you had found out, so thanks for letting us know!
ReplyDeleteThank goodness Di! I always think that the more time you spend stroking, grooming and cuddling your pets, the more likely it is that you'll catch anything early. So glad for you. Vicky xx

So glad for you, Len, and Dudley!
ReplyDeleteWonderful news. I'm so glad for you all.
ReplyDeleteValerija xx
What a relief to know it's benign!!! So happy to hear that. :-)
ReplyDeleteOh, my heart dropped when I saw the words melanoma, but am I to understand that it could have become malignant if let go? Thank goodness you were on top of it right away and had the resources to get it taken care of. With Dudley's long coat you won't even be able to tell he had the surgery once his fur grows back.
ReplyDeleteIsn't this the best Christmas present ever?!!
oh!!!!! I'm so happy for Dudley and your family. It's good news!!!! Hugs, Brigitte
ReplyDeleteI'm so pleased for you and Len and of course Dudley. I heard your sigh of relief from here! xx
ReplyDeleteSorry I missed seeing this post - sometimes and for no apparent reason a post won't move up in the list on my side bar. That is really good news and Dudley is one lucky dog in having owners who are so vigilant and caring. Hugs to all
ReplyDeleteI was so pleased to hear this news, although poor Dudley has been through the wars, and you two have been there so much too with the stress and worry. Well done, Dudley, for resting on mum's slipper ... love to all xx
ReplyDeleteI am so pleased he is ok. I had a very similar thing with my Westie when he was around the same age and I remember how awful it was. He had it on his head and afterwards he always had a funny line in his hair where the scar was. Give Dudley a hug from me.

Aww poor little man and you, such worry but pleased to read its all good. I wish him a speedy recovery. Hugs Emmax
ReplyDeleteI'm playing catch up on the Dudley news before I leave Saturday on my Christmas travels around the western USA and this is wonderful! I'm so happy for Dudley, and both of you of course, and admit to having kept him in my prayers. :-D
