Less is More - Spring Flower(s)

The current challenge over at Less is More is one layer, with the theme of Spring Flowers. I chose a single tulip:
I used:

- 5" x 5" square white card blank, tent style

- masked off a strip across the centre of the card and just daubed SU 'Daffodil Delight' ink using a make up sponge to give a mottled effect

- the stamp is one of the very first ones I ever bought, it's from a set of five, with no name, and they were a real novelty at the time as they're clear stamps already mounted onto acrylic blocks and the stems on some spell out a flower name or some other wording. Sigh, the fact that they don't stamp brilliantly is a shame - perhaps they were just a tad before their time. However, I used SU 'Old Olive' to stamp the image and a 'Ruby' Pro Marker to colour in the head of the tulip

- then to finish off I just added a couple of score lines above and below the yellow stripe using the trick of scoring on the right side and then flipping the card over and following the same lines to raise the lines on the right side. I did giggle here, another lovely bloggy friend used this trick recently and said they'd spotted it elsewhere - I jumped in and squealed what a good idea. Then subsequently realised it was probably me that had done it 'cos that's always how I score when I want to follow a line on the front of a card :) Just make sure you don't press too hard when you flip it over for fear of ripping the card

- of course the Pro Marker did bleed through the card so I just backed the inside with a slightly smaller square of white card. Chrissie assured me ages ago that it still counts as one layer :)

The background reminds me of rag-rolling - anyone else remember when that was all the rage and we rag-rolled, stippled and stencilled walls like there was no tomorrow?

Edit: The lovely Jules reminded me where the stamp set came from - Lakeland Limited, back in the days when they sold craft goodies - apparently she has the same set too :)

  1. Oh - pretty. I like your double scoring & think I used it recently too. (Told ya I'm a confirmed copier). The rose doesn't look as though it didn't stamp well, and it's awesome against the mottled gold-y background. Simple, elegant. Yes, I remember watching the ragrolling, crumpled cling wrap texturizing of walls. Never tried it myself. Not that brave. Off to do some visitin' with Parsnip. TFS & Hugs

  7. Hi Di

I have that same set of 5 stamps!! Surprise, surprise!!

Did they come from Lakeland Plastics? I have a feeling they did.

Love your card .. .. it is a great look!

You asked about the Christmas tree on my card on Sunday.

It is Penny Black "3741K" Filigree Tree. One of my favourite .. .. in fact probably my very favourite .. . Christmas tree stamps.

Hope you are having a good week and have seen some sunshine.

    Love Jules xx

  12. Ah yes, I too remember when Lakeland did crafting goodies - shame they stopped, if you ask me!!

Your card is simply lovely and I like the embossed border that you've done as it just finishes it beautifully

  13. Cor I remember when rag rolling was the thing, though I cannot do that in our house - too many knobbly stones - it already looks rolled! Haa Haa!
Lakeland! Those were the days. Still got some stuff too!

  16. Hi Di, I love your stamp, it`s fab and it looks as if it`s stamped ok to me. Have you tried rubbing it all over with a white erazer, it`s supposed to bring stamps back to life.
I well remember rag rolling too. Spent a week rag rolling my living room walls, they looked good too...at the time.
Thank you so much for your comments on my blog. I`ve decided that it`s their loss, not mine. I`m quite enjoying my time off for now and as we`re going on holiday at easter I`m not even thinking about looking for anything else til after then.

  17. I haven't heard it called Rag-Rolling before but I do remember everyone doing the technique with big sponges. I remember seeing it on people's walls too.

Lovely simple card! That's one nifty stamp.

  20. Brilliant idea, love the image and the yellow border and as I can not do scoring for love or money I am very envious of that.

I was very tempted to put a cheeky comment asking if that tulip was blown down with the same wind that blew the fence down!!

Rag rolling was way before my time!

  24. Lovely card Di. I like the sponged effect background and the stamp too ... I don't think it matters that the stamp doesn't make a perfect impression :) Hugs, Elizabeth xx

PS: not sure why, but your card reminds me of Italy!
