Birthday card for three year old Jack

This is as much for my records as anything as it was so simple to make and (shock, horror) I used a kit! I needed it right at the end of the Grand Draw marathon and was so happy to find I had this kit to hand:
Not much to tell about how I made it - the A5 kit card is (I think) Hunkydory from a Craft event I went to a little while ago. It comes with the design printed back and front plus a nicely co-ordinating insert - and of course the topper with (how lucky) three soldiers on.

Then all I did was to hand cut the banner strip from a snippet of black card and glue it in place. Finally added Jack's name using die cut red letters and popped the number 3 (gold peel off) onto the busby of the middle one of the three soldiers!

Sorry to be a bit slow on commenting on both this latest challenge and also the previous Grand Draw one!

I'm still here, but running around trying to make up for lost time. Took Dudley to the Vet today for more of his prescription monthly worming pills ........... plus a three-monthly flea/tick tablet as he's nearing six months old. He now weighs 5.5kg ☺

I have no problems with the worming tablets - he's been on them for a couple of months now, loves them and they don't cause a reaction either! But am not happy with the flea/tick tablet he has been prescribed. We both feel so uneasy with supposed (possible but devastating) side effects of this particular tablet that we may well not give it to him but look at some less aggressive treatments. Dudley is 'flea free' but we thought it best to prevent rather than have to cure. Anyone here heard of or used 'Bravecto' - that's what he's been prescribed? Come on my doggie friends - help me!!

Love from us all and a woof from Dudley(who looked great for his outing after little Parsnip spent ages bustling around grooming him beforehand - bless my little white bear, who is proving to be a very good 'nanny'),

  1. What a cute card Di, I love the soldiers and I'm sure Jack will love it, especially as you have personalised it beautifully with his name and age. With regard to the Bravecto I don't know anything about it not having had a dog, but reading some people's tales of woe of the results of using it I think like you it would be wise to see if there is anything else that effectively treats fleas but in a different way to that. x

  2. Sometimes that ounce of prevention is worse than the pound of cure. I don't know anything about that product.

Cute card for a little soldier turning 3. [Bunny]`

  5. Hi Di... I know about Bravecto as it's available for cats but I don't use it to treat my cat, never have. I always use Frontline which is available for dogs too. I don't think it lasts as long, normally 8 weeks for dogs but I believe it's less risky without so much negativity and my cats have never had any adverse reactions to it. I hope that helps a little. Your card is so sweet for a little boy and lovely it's so personalised x

  6. Love, love the card! As for fleas, never treated my dog when we had her, but I do treat the cats with drops that I get from vets. Sure they must do them for dogs as well.

  7. How fortuitous that you had this super kit - obviously it was meant to be for Jack. My cats were always treated with front-line liquid applied - often with difficulty - to the scruff of their necks. Know nothing about the product you mention.

  8. A lovely card Di. I know how you feel about quick cards, sometimes I feel like I've cheated when I've made a kit card!
Glad to hear Dudley is doing well.

  9. Wonderful card for a three year old - I am sure Jack will love it.
I have used Bravecto for the first time on my cat,for worms and fleas/ticks - at this point there is no reaction - it's usually the second application that could possibly show allergies/a reaction. The blurb noted reactions similar to the Frontline blurb, so obviously a similar treatment, just longer lasting (for cats)

  10. So cute is this card Di Jack will just adore it, Dudley being so small does make your worry about any side effects from prescribed medication but it can still be a worry l would just keep an eye on him where Fleas/ticks are concerned and it’s so cold for him to get any thing at the moment sending him hugs and enjoy your day xx

  11. Brilliant card, Di, love the look and who’d know it was a kit. I don’t use kits music either but sometimes thunks it’s snobvery as they are nice toppers, peel offs and such. Re Meds can’t helpfor doggies, however personally take lots.
It’s a precaution thing a lot of the wanting that come with meds these days they need to cover all bases so doesn’t mean Dear little Dudley will suffer with it. Hopefully someone does have some info. BTW am I blind 🥴 as I can’t see the grand draw post you mention in this blog post? Mind you wouldn’t put it past me?!
    Praying for you and Dudley.

  12. Fab soldier card for a 3 year old. Just right.

Oh, goodness me, if you're not sure Bravecto is right for Dudley . . . please don't give it to him. You'd never forgive yourself if you knew about adverse reactions beforehand and he suffered from one. WHY is there something on the market that could HARM the dog?????

    Hugs, Sarn xxx

  14. Your kit came in handy and it is an adorable card! Little Jack must have loved it! Hope you get Dudley's meds sorted so you can be comfortable with them. We have a flea treatment here called Advantage that you sort of insert into the fur on the neck and it lasts a month if I remember correctly. My cats don't go outside so we don't have to use it often, only when we notice the cats scratching more than usual.

  15. A lovely card for a little boy Di. Both our dogs have Bravecto with no side effects, but I suppose every dog is different just like us humans. They didn't have it when they were as young as little Dudley as I think it may be a fairly new treatment xx

  16. That is a great card for Jack. I love the little gold "3" on his hat. How fast the time goes! I don't know anything about Bravecto. Molly takes a heart worm medicine once a month in pill form but that's all. I would talk to the vet about changing it if you aren't comfortable giving it to Dudley.

    Have a great week, Majda

  18. Very cool card!! I love incorporating something that shows the age of the recipient (well, at least while they are young! lol).

  19. The kit you used looks so fun and cute, well done to put it into a quick card!! Surely Jack has been so happy for it!!
Here in Italy this product there isn't. But if you aren't sure about it, don't use it... Mamas always know more than doctors about their babies... :D
On my cats I use Frontline drops to put on the neck, as Advantage or others flea treatments. No one of my cats in my life had problems.

  20. Well, kit or not kit this is an adorable card! I have a few kits myself, and tend to forget to use them, but everything is coordinated so can be very helpful in a pinch. I always still feel that a card is a bit naked without some stamping though...haha!

I've never given a flea treatment pill to either my cats or to Toby, but always used Advantage topical treatment. It works wonderfully against fleas and I had used it on 5 cats and 1 dog...of all ages, without ever having a bad experience. I just bought Frontline, with works on fleas and ticks, to use on Toby, as he's picked up a tick or two this past year. He's 13 years old, so I'm more cautious with medications and would worry about something given internally. I can understand you worry with such a little guy as Dudley.

  21. Can see why you got that kit, Di--perfect card for a 3 yr old boy! Fritz is on Nexgard for flea/tick protection. We don't think it's given him any side effects & no fleas or ticks, thank goodness!

  22. This looks super. Forgotten we had those kits. I may well have to resort to using if my arm doesn't improve. Can't believe the twins opposite wil be 2 yrs old in February. I made them an interactive card for Christmas which they loved so I've gone and set a precedent now. Hugs Me.

  23. P.s. I know cats are different to dogs but they do a doggy version. I used to use a pipette of liquid that you put on the nape of the neck where they couldn't reach to lick it off. Never had any problems only can't remember what it was called now. Der.

  25. Fabulous card, perfectly personalised too! Jack must have loved it! I don't blame you worrying about the flea treatment, I hope you find something less worrying! Hugs xxxxxxx

  26. Fabulous card Di and that is a super kit with the soldiers.

As for Dudley and the flea/tick tablet, I'm afraid I can't help you there but my daughter's dog (in australia) got a tick bite a few years back and had to be rushed to the vet. She was very poorly (touch and go) but with excellent treatment and a weeks stay at the vets she did make it through and is still as daft and playful as ever. I suppose what you have to weigh up is the likelihood of him getting a tick bite rather than fleas and maybe try some of the alternatives suggested xx
