A very odd archway

This stamped image almost makes me cross-eyed! Shame as it's lovely otherwise:
I used:

- 4.25" x 5.5" white card blank

- white card stock, stamped using Memento 'Tuxedo Black' ink and a stamp I've had for ages made by Inca, called 'Church Window'. I've inked it up before but always discarded the results - tell you just why after I finish listing what I used

- coloured the image using Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils and Sansodor blending solution

- stamped the sentiment using Memento 'Tuxedo Black' ink and a stamp from SU's 'Sheltering Tree' set

- die cut the image panel using a Lil'Inkers Stitched Rectangle die then layered it onto a snippet of pale blue card stock

- die cut a teeny butterfly using SU's Embosslits 'Beautiful Wings', added it to the card, tickled with clear Wink of Stella and then added a single little pearl

It's always hard to make sympathy/thinking of you cards so it's good to have one on standby.

Now, why d'you think that image makes my teeth itch so much? It might be me, but am sure the whole perspective of the archway is 'off'. It appears to be leaning to one side a bit for starters (that's 'cos it narrows in on the left hand side) but it's the right hand side that bugs me most - almost as if the stone arch switches from being an outer to an inner without reason. It's always struck me as somewhat 'odd' anyhow - and not a stamp I'll be using again in a hurry :(

  1. This is perfect Di. An archway is an archway in whatever medium you choose.
I do see what you mean about the stamp though. They haven't got the perspective have they. It needs to have a recessed ledge along the bottom. I do love what you have done with the stamp and it is perfect for a sympathy card. Thankyou so much for fluttering by my challenge. hugs Mrs A.
p.s. Just about to post some more ideas up on my blog. Iv'e got the bug now.

  2. It's very beautiful and would be a perfect sympathy card, but I totally get what you mean about the archway. I think I can see the root of the problem too - the central column appears to start from the outer edge of the windowsill and yet join the inside of the top of the arch. It's a well known optical illusion that makes the image look as if it alters - Escher used it in a lot of his art. There are some similar examples in the left hand column of this page: https://www.brainbashers.com/opticalillusions.asp
I reckon if you were to stamp the image again and draw in the correct lines of the windowsill with a black pen it would look in much better proportion. It might still lean a little - on the other hand, taking away the optical illusion effect might just sort that out too. If not, you could always add some more flowers up the side!

    1. Or just chuck the stamp away and call it a day?xx

    2. I don't think I've ever chucked a stamp away. I've just been looking for one that says "Happy anniversary" (No, I didn't find one) and I unearthed a whole box of old, unloved stamps in the depths of the spare room. Several are totally unusable - damaged, brittle, cracked or never gave a clear image in the first place. But I can't bear to part with them!

  3. I think you've done a bang up job on what I would have considered to be super challenging!! Not sure I have ANYTHING that would fit (but you HAVE set me wondering now!!!). I agree with you that the stamp (NOT the stamping) does look a little odd and I probably wouldn't be using it again myself either!

It's a super card and I'm sure it suits the challenge perfectly, Di

  4. I think you've done a great job. It is definitely and arch and the flowers and butterfly are very pretty. This has been a difficult one hasn't it Who'd have thought an arch would cause so much thought!. It's interesting reading what Jane had to say. Barbxx

  5. Pretty card Di-but I totally get where you are coming from with that Arch stamp(I thought my vertigo had kicked in for a moment there LOL!)How peculiar, almost like the designer popped out for a coffee and forgot to come back and finish it off! I wonder if you masked it and made a row of 3 of them so it was a larger window whether you would lose that wobbly effect? It's a lovely card, and perfect as a Sympathy card :)

  6. It's all in the eye of the beholder Di, it looks rather good to me just as it is and sure it will fit the challenge perfectly. Whether or not I get round it joining in is another matter though, I do have one made yesterday that would fir a treat but can't blog that till the weekend so will need to check out the dates.

  8. A lovely idea for the challenge Di and love the stitched rectangle and the prettily coloured flowers and of course the cute little butterfly. I can see what you mean about the perspective. That would irk me too. x

  9. Love the design of this card Di. I see what you mean about the stamp.... I think the stonemason must have taken a tipple or two of the local brew before he got his chisel out xx

  10. Lovely card Di. this challenge has me stumped too.
The Arch does look like an Escher creatioin.

  11. That is a fantastic card Di though I see what you mean about the arches. However at first look I did not see anything wrong so maybe close scrutiny makes it worse!

  12. Mmm, I see what you mean too but it is still a great image for the challenge and for a thinking of you card, lovely.

  13. This looks so pretty Di that I didn't notice the stamp error either until I had read your text and went back to have a closer look. There is a perspective issue but your card looks lovely all the same.

  14. Oh well done for creating an arch card for Mrs A's challenge. Hmm, I reckon it just needs an extra line drawn in on the right hand side of the left pane of glass where one line stops above the middle pillar? Get yer permanent pen out Missus . . . what have you got to lose?

  15. Miss, I see what you mean about the perspective. But, actually, if you really look closely at what you're describing, the image does make sense! If you follow the design over to the other side, it DOES match up. And it's very pretty too, most appropriate for a Sympathy card. Certainly meets the challenge of Arch in my book!
The bouquet of flowers softens the window corner and loved the tiny butterfly tucked in there. WTGo. TFS & Hugs
