A look back in time

The current challenge over at Craftyhazelnut's Christmas Challenge is 'People matter' - in other words use one or more people on your card. And of course it's always 'Anything Goes' over at Craftyhazelnut's Christmas Challenge Extra.

Out came the box of last year's Christmas cards to upcycle and there was a card too sweet to chop about but what was more eye catching - I hate to say it - but I'm almost sure I remember Christmas cards with similar images being the 'norm' when I was a kid. Ha, and this one was labelled 'Vintage Christmas' on the back - which puts me right in my place - sigh :(
I used:

- 5" x 7" white card blank

- green paper to cover the whole card front from a magazine 'freebie' paper pack, topped with striped paper from the same pack

- the already glittered image, trimmed carefully to keep the gold glittered edging

- dark green ribbon from my ribbon box, wrapped around the card spine and tied in a bow.

I've mentioned this little trick before, I do usually stick ribbons across the front only of cards with the ends hidden behind a layer of card either on the front or even on the inside of the card itself. On the rare occasion I tie a ribbon right around the spine of a card I always tie the bow on the very edge of my card - the right hand edge in this case. This gives you some 'purchase' and allows the ribbon to be nice and firm around the card (ie, without any 'droop'). Then all you need to do is to gently wiggle the ribbon with the ready tied bow into position/bow - if it's really tight then gently 'bow' the card to give some slackness so you can move the ribbon.

  2. Tee hee Di .. .. well we will sit in the vintage corner together then because I remember images like this on Christmas cards too.

Plus they were almost paper thin and started to bend and buckle within hours of being stood up.

Perhaps that's why Mum started hanging them over bits of string (that thinking about it now looked like Bakers Twine) or pegging them onto it with plastic little pegs .. with sharp edges!! Ouch!!

    Ahh.. memory lane.

Hope your week is going well.

    Love Jules xx

  4. Hi Di,
    fab vintage card.
Love that super scene, and your card you have created with it.
I too remember cards similar to this in fact I have one I sent to my sisters, don't ever remember sending it though, but found it amongst my mother's things when she passed away.
She was a great hoarder though, and we found lots of things from our childhood and teenage years when sorting out.
The most hilarious thing was a furry yellow duck in a hat box, I know that doesn't sound funny, but picture the scene me and my sisters are sorting everything out, and we come across this hat box open it up and out jumps this duck because he was squashed in there.
Lots of crafty love. Jenny L.

  11. Wow, what a lot of Christmas cards you have made Di, and this has some great upcycling. I love this vintage image and the pretty green bow, and thanks for the tips on tying ribbon. I must say I quite often find it difficult to tie ribbon tight enough. x

  13. Vintage huh? I guess I'm vintage to now. lol I remember these well and I love how you made your card using an up-cycled card from last year. Some are just so pretty you hate to throw them away. Now this card can live on once again. Hugs, Brenda

  14. I love the vintage Christmas card look. When I used ribbon I would cut to the length of the card and stick it all down. Sometimes the ends would fray so I'm glad to learn of your trick!

    Hugs,
    Kay
