Not so long ago I had the heartbreaking task of making a Sympathy card for the widow of a much loved neighbour - we four have been friends for over 30 years, which is quite some time. I really struggled with our own grief and decided earlier this week that it isn't impersonal to have a few Sympathy cards to hand after all. And so I made a set of three cards - all following similar processes, just with different images and card sizes/orientations:
Here's the three I made! |
I used:
- 4.75" x 4.75" plain white card blank, side opening, The other two cards are USA A2 size, in different orientations, both side opening as well
- the images are all from the Penny Black Stickeroos sheet called 'Timeless', stuck onto snippets of card ages ago and this time they were trimmed right to the edge before running a black TomBow brush pen around all four sides
- fun time next! Linby aka our Lynn, got me fired up to try out some new sentiments - ready stamped and die cut. The best part is that the sentiment itself can be foiled, in my case I used my laminator and spent a couple of hours doing a whole batch of them to have on standby. The sentiment pieces are by Julie Hickey from the 'Assorted Sentiments #2 Die Cut Foilables' set (116 in the set!). I did push the boat out and bought 'WOW' Fab foil in Glitter Gold and Silver. I do not recommend the glitter gold as the end results can look rather 'bitty' due to the different tones of gold - just my opinion though - you might love it, as I thought I would! In fairness, I do have some reservations - one or two of the sentiment pieces were badly printed, some quality control issues there perhaps plus some other minor things. Overall, I'm very pleased and huge thanks to Lynn for once again being an enabler! Needless to say, both the silver foiling and the silver mirror card look black in the above photos! Usual story
- so, I foiled some appropriate sentiments in silver and just glued them onto the images - it DOES make sense to foil a batch of sentiments in one go - unless your laminator is sitting there ready and waiting, 24/7of course
- then glued the images onto slightly larger snippets of white card before backing them with slightly larger snippets of silver mirror card
- all that was left was to add each image panel onto the relevant card blank, using narrow sticky foam strips ...... finished!
I'd like to enter this card into the following challenges:
- Allsorts Challenge # 819 HERE - under 'Anything Goes'
- Darnell's NBUS Challenge #72 HERE - the Julie Hickey Foilables sentiments and also the 'WOW' Fab Foil were out to have a first play
Dudley Pupdate: Excitement here - mid-week could see Dudley on a real pupdate here with his beloved Tilly. Tilly's Mum Kim is possibly bringing her round for a pupdate and, earlier on Friday afternoon I was talking to him, as per usual and said 'Do you know that Tilly is coming around for a pupdate?' I kid you not - at that point he'd been sitting quietly beside me doing quality control on the dicing of his fresh veggies as part of his evening meal - but he literally stood up, raised his ears and stared straight down our garden as if to say, 'I KNOW where she lives and sleeps Mama, we already have a direct line!' He sure cracks me up! Whatever else, the week also holds a clip, bath and annual vet visit for Dudley! Little does he know as yet. 👀
Remember, the results from Sarn's Challenge #501 are now published in the Snippets Playground HERE.
Do come and play with us in the Playground - the Spring clean-up has been completed (Sarn is a slave driver when the wind is behind her sails but it looks wonderful) and everything is ready to roll! It's the second week of Challenge #502, so do please come and and play if you haven't already done so.
Love as always, Dudley and yours truly,
Hi Miss Di, three wonderful cards for your stash, I think we always hope not to need these kinds of cards, I grew up with neighbours being stand-in grandparents as ours lived several hours away, they came to school for grandparents' day etc. and when mum was working late, they were our after-school care. Have a wonderful week... Megan
ReplyDeleteA beautiful set of cards Di, such a good idea to have some ready for such sad occasions. I do empathise as we’ve lost two recently. I hope Dudley enjoys his date! xxx
ReplyDeleteSadly it's necessary to have one of two in the basket Di, I've found more than once when needed and you don't have it's twice as hard to make.
ReplyDeleteAll three are very elegant for purpose, many thanks fro sharing one with us at Allsorts challenge.

These cards are so elegant and tasteful and it is a sad and very true fact that this type of card is needed from time to time. I agree that having some in hand is a good idea for when you're probably not quite in the mindset for making such a card when the occasion arises. Thank you for joining with us on the Allsorts challenge with these.
ReplyDeleteUsing a laminator for foiling is something I know nothing about - some investigation needed methinks. Maybe Dudley will think his promised 'wash and brush up' is not so bad, especially as he has a date 😊
Your make is lovely.
ReplyDeleteYes, I went through the same loop as you, making a card whilst grief stricken, and have made it a habit to have a couple "in reserve" ever since - so much easier to do when they're not actively needed
I hope Dudley will enjoy his playdate and that it won't get out of hand!!!
Happy Snippet Day
Kathyk
All three cards are very elegant and tasteful and appropriate for their intended use.
ReplyDeleteI like to have at least two sympathy cards ready made, as crafty mojo just disappears when you're in the throes of grief. The heartfelt words inside are the important bit.
Hope Dudley get through the Vet Visit and his bathing without too much hassle in order to enjoy his date with Tilly. Hope he behaves in a gentlemanly fashion! xxx
These kind of cards are hard to make but you succeeded very well Di! They are elegant you used nice colours.

They are all beautiful and definitely a good idea to make them when you are emotionally torn. I'm so pleased you gave the toner foil a go - it looks fab. I think I agree about some looking bitty and when photographed don't show! Another tip if any foil misses is to use a gel pen or any gold etc pen you have - saves it from the bin. Thanks also for popping in to share with us at Allsorts challenge. Poor Dudley - if only he knew what's in store...
ReplyDeleteA lovely collection of cards Di. I always keep a few 'Sympathy' and 'Thinking of You' cards in my box as I hate making them when I need them - if that makes sense!

A beautiful collection of sympathy cards, Di. I keep meaning to have a few made in advance, as they always seem more difficult to make when I need them. Thanks for the reminder, I think I may try to get a few made this week. Sounds like Dudley has a busy week, I hope you have a few treats ready as a reward for what he has in store.

All three are fitting sympathy cards.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the pupdate; really hope he has one with Tilly!
Thank you for joining us at Allsorts!
So sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. Good on you for making a small batch of sympathy cards - I really must do that also... and just quietly, they are beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteHow dare Linby be an enabler... people like that really mess with our budgets ;)
Oh dear - Dudley has quite the week lined up for him.... both good and not quite so good. I can see some bribery coming up :)
Blessings
Maxine
Not an easy card to make and even worse when its a friend but this is so lovely x
