First of all, thank you to everyone who hopped in with ideas about what to do with the huge number of hand made cards I have that are looking for a good home. I'll let you know the outcome, mwah!
This is my latest card:
I used:
- 5" x 5" square white card blank
- a snippet of plum coloured card trimmed slightly smaller than the card front and popped into place
- a piece of paper from the Wild Rose Studio 'Butterfly Garden' paper pad (free with QCME magazine ages ago), cut down to size
- snippet of cream card stock, embossed using a recent freebie with QCME magazine - a butterflies embossing folder which is beautiful but it did so want to cut right through the card stock I used
- trimmed the embossed panel to size and stuck it onto the Butterfly Garden background
- added a little strip of plum card to break up the join between the embossed panel and the patterned paper. As usual, I deliberately had the plum card strip longer than needed and just trimmed it down with scissors (from the back) after it was stuck in place
- stuck the whole panel over the plum background with a border showing
- added gold 'Happy Birthday' peel off strips down the plum centre strip
Any ideas about the embossing folder malarky? It's quite thick plastic and took some cranking through the Cuttlebug which I did fear for at one point - am sure I once read something about adding a sheet of sacrificial paper to folders which threaten to cut your card - problem is that might make the tightness situation even worse :( Shame as it's a lovely folder too.

Hello Di :)
ReplyDeleteI would say you need to swap out one of your B plates for something thinner. Either several shims or a handy booklet of the right size and depth or a mix of the two.
Hadn't realised I had been MIA for so long!
www.postpals.co.uk may be another avenue to consider for your cards if any are kid themed :)
Question: Do you have an 'add email notification for latest updates' button and I've just missed it or no? I keep falling behind on your posts as I rely HEAVILY on being updated by email. Sorry, hun. Will go play catch up :)
Lovely embossed butterfly card.
ReplyDeleteI understand that taping some vellum inside the embossing folder will help with those folders that threaten to cut through normal card. I have tried it and it seems to work although I don't know why!
Hugs, Sarn xxx
Beautiful card Di.Love the embossing and the butterflies.
ReplyDeleteA perfect entry for the current Butterfly challenge Di.
ReplyDeleteDon't think I am a fit person to offer help with the embossing folder issue, I was once told I should be banned from using cutting machines as I am an 'abuser'. I think those at TL would shudder if they saw some of my embossing folders, I have a habit of shoving them in without lining up and the corners get mangled.
Pleased you got some ideas for sending your cards to charity, I think it just has to be a cause special to us individually. All mine go to the AHT where they have a section in their Visitor Centre just for my cards now. Started taking them about three years ago when we lost Buffy, they have done so much for our animals over the years and raise far more from the cards than I could ever afford to donate.

Such a beautiful butterfly embossing folder and yes some of the folders are so tricky. I have a Big shot and the new WRMK or even the Spellbinders folders dont actually work with the recommended sandwich...I have to play around to get the fit right!
ReplyDeleteA pretty card Di and a lovely embossing folder. I've had a similar problem with a freebie EB and swapped one of my B plates for several old sheets of card.

A really pretty card Di and l love the paper and embossing folder freebies and a great idea to use a vertical sentiment. x
ReplyDeleteYour card is lovely Di. I also like the vertical sentiment. The folder is very pretty. Glad you managed to get the EF through ok. I wonder if the freebies are sometimes seconds. I've had a few dies that weren't very good at all. One I even threw away. Perhaps it's just me! Barbxx
ReplyDeleteGorgeous embossing folder, Di.
ReplyDeleteReally pretty design. X
Gorgous card, love the embossed panel in white!!
ReplyDeleteI have had the some problem. In the Big shot some embossing folder cranck the cardstock if used with the normal plate, but sometimes the solution is to put a plate under the Ef and a different plate, more elastic, over it. For the Big shot this go well

I use it also with the dies that make scoring lines, so these don't be cut.
My Tim Holtz folders cut through the card after I have embossed them and I have no idea how to fix it or stop it from happening. So would be interested in what our lovely crafters recommend. Love the embossing on your card - the embossed butterflies are seriously wonderful Karen x
ReplyDeleteI love your embossed butterflies and pretty paper, a lovely butterfly challenge card.
ReplyDeleteI have also found that some EF s cut right through the card and don't know how to remedy it. I will try Sarn's vellum idea but like you say it seems hard enough to squeeze it through the Cuttlebug without adding extra layers.

Love, love, love that embossing folder you used Di! Such a beautiful card!
ReplyDeleteSome of my folders don't like going through the Cuttlebug either at times. I try to use 'not as thick' paper and also flip over the B plates to see if that helps.

This turned out so pretty Di! I love the split panels with the vertical sentiment. Maybe you could try eliminating the top plate and adding 2 pieces of rubber mat........or even something soft like a mouse pad?
ReplyDeleteSomething is seriously up with my email notifications as not only didn't I get the outbid notices from ebay until well after the end times (grrr) I didn't get the emails telling me there were last mintute entries to the butterfly challenge so now I 'm chasing my tail catching up before running Mr Random Org. It's gonna be a long long night!!
ReplyDeleteAnyway I digress. Love the purple cardstock and the stickers going down the page are most unusual. I like it. Shame about the E.F. nearly cutting through. I have one Sizzix EF. that does the same so can't blame it on being a cheap substitute. I think what everyone else has suggested about trying a different sandwich (I hear Salmon and water cress are good!!) might work for you. Maybe also using a different gsm on your cardstock itself.
Yep X is still there but you will be pleased to know that Zzzzzzz has gone. Your so going to kick yourself when X marks the spot is revealed!!
Thankyou for fluttering by #40. hugs Mrs A.
YAY!! I bet it's SPOTS then Mrs A - whoop, whoop!!! Am ahead of the game now :))
