It's taken us
years to capture 'Spike the Hedgehog' in a reasonably decent night time photo, under the garden spotlights, but one evening the week before last, Len managed to catch him whilst he was somewhat preoccupied:
He did turn his head to cast a beady eye at the camera, and then quickly returned to the object of his interest:
Oh help - he'd only brought a girlfriend to dinner! And we don't think dinner was the only thing on the menu either.
Len has now christened them 'Horace and Doris' - quite why is lost on me :)
The worry is, if there are little 'Spikelets' in a few weeks time as a result, we'll be doing the hedgehog rescue palaver all over again.
In fact it got even more complicated - later on we found CCTV shots of THREE hedgies dancing around the lawn playing 'ring a ring o' rosies'! Little perishers :)

What a great picture of the two hedgehogs Di and rather late in the year for amorous activity I would have thought. Perhaps the third one was trying to entice Spike's lady friend to visit his neck of the woods instead or else this is a jolly little threesome.. hahaha. x

ReplyDeleteIt does seem a funny time of year for hanky panky - perhaps they were just trying to keep warm! Do hedgehogs hibernate?

ReplyDeleteOh how sweet! And a girlfriend (or two!) too! We had a hedgehog (named Harry. May have been short for Hariette.) living in our garden for a couple of years. He (she?) was the sweetest thing, and I for one certainly appreciated the reduction in the phenomenal slug population around here. One day he simply vanished. we all miss him snuffling around the garden, and hope he found a nice new home and is safe somewhere! x

ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to see the Heggies :-D We actually get them out here on my little Greek island (unfortunately I only see the results of road pizza Heggies :-( so sad) but I never even knew we had them here ! I wonder what they eat all summer when it's too hot for the snails to come out ????? :-)

You (or Len) did well to capture them in a photo, they are adorable albeit full of fleas !
ReplyDeleteI've been trying for years to manage that with ours. Trouble is the dogs all give them hassle so as soon as they hear us they assume it's in the form of a lab or terrier and make for the undergrowth.

I don't think we have hedgies around here, so this is the first I've gotten a good look at them (and Len's photos are fantastic). They are quite cute.
ReplyDeleteDi, you are so lucky to have a single hedgehog in the garden, never mind a whole family. I don't think you need worry about babies until next year as hedgehogs should now be fattening up ready to hibernate for the winter.

ReplyDeleteIn my zone there are a lot of them, but they cross the road to go to look for the water and little worms in the streams, so the cars crush them... :(
Oh my, you have a hedgehog hotel! They are so cute and to have them right where you can see them is fun. I've never seen one in person (is that what you say) or is it in animal? Nevertheless, they are cute and I can't wait to see the babies.
