Playing with shaving foam

Over at Technique Time Tuesday the current challenge is to make your own coloured card using the shaving foam technique (basically a shallow tray of the stuff, colours swirled through and then card pressed down to pick up the swirls). I had a little play yesterday and found it great fun - if a bit messy. I used Tim Holtz re-inkers for the colouring as I'd completely forgotten I had some really vibrant Dylusions which would have given a much brighter result - next time though :)

This is what I made using some of the 'shaving foam treated' card, we actually had sunshine here when I took the photo, so the colours look a bit washed out I'm afraid:
 I used:

- 7" x 5" white card blank

- top half of the card is the shaving foam treated card

- the bottom half is paper from a Pink Petticoat pad called 'Vintage Rose Collection, had it for ages and it came free with Quick Cards Made Easy magazine

- pink spotted ribbon to hide the join

- big pink button with a turquoise embroidery thread bow

- butterflies are actually cut from pink spotted paper from the Pink Petticoat pad, using SU's 'Beautiful Wings' embosslits, topped with turquoise pearls

- sentiment is stamped with SU stamp from the 'Sincere Salutations' set, using SU 'Baja Breeze' ink pad and punched with SU scalloped oval punch

  1. I've only tried this technique once - in a class. It was a lot of fun though, and bet the Dylusions would be great (just got the new colors yes'dy). Great that your pretty card fits in with Mrs A's latest as well. Way to go! TFS & hugs

  4. Oooooo Miss you mucky puppy! I have my tin of shaving foam to the ready but you've beaten me to it. I love the pastel shades you have achieved which match that pretty paper down to a T. Just you wait till I get my paws on my very own SU butterflies! Loving the turquoise embroidery thread and the little tiny pearls. You are a clever clogs. Thankyoooo for fluttering by my next challenge. Hugs Mrs A .(butterfly challenge).

  5. Taken me hat off now. Have seen this technique in a tutorial which is why I got me a tin from Wilkinsons to have a try. Waiting for some nice weather so I can do it out in the garden. Me not silly. Paper is a perfect foil for your swirls. Button is a smashing match for the paper too.
    Hugs Mrs A.

  15. I did the shaving foam technique with my 2-5 year-olds in my nursery once, but we used poster paint for colour. Can you imagine what fun we had!! It is a great technique though, and you can get some really lovely results.
This is a lovely card. Your swirls match the pretty designer paper at the base, very well. Kate x

  17. Such a pretty card Di. It's a messy technique but doesn't it smell nice while you are doing it? I like the pastel colours you've made using the reinkers - I think I'll try some next time I get the tin of shaving foam out. I usually use glimmer mist and get a quite different result. Anyway, I like yours and you would think you had deliberately made it to match that lovely paper :) Hugs, Elizabeth xx

  18. This is pretty Di and I love your papers, especially your handmade marbled one. It did bring a smile to my face 'cos many many many years ago (3 million probably) I went to a workshop and one of the techniques they did was this one, I immediately bought a tin of shaving foam and ..... it is still on the shelf (lol) methinks it has been there so long it will have lost all of its psssssssst and won't come out of the tin now!

Think you have made a beautiful card with yours!!!

    Hugs to you Sue Pxxx

  19. Your card is so pretty and soft. You definitely got the butterfly, the button, and the bow. Very well done.

I never did see the appeal of the technique. It seems so similar to this "faux marbling" kit I had. Although I suppose this is cheaper and that was the appeal. I didn't much care for the marbling either. Its not my thang to do. I don't mind seeing the results though.
