Bonfire Night Birthday

Yesterday one of our young neighbours reached 11 years old. He recently became very grown up and now cycles to and from school with friends. So, of course his card had to feature a bike a bit like his - I know it's orange but haven't really been close enough to pick up more details so had to sort of 'wing' this card:
I used:

- 5.75" x 5.75" square white card blank

- a whole sheet of paper from a paper stack called 'Let's Fly Away', free with Quick Cards Made Easy back in 2012, trimmed to exactly fit the card front then glued in place

- then trimmed a snippet of white card to the same width as the card front and about 3.25" in height

- die cut the sentiment from a snippet of green card, using a die by Impression Obsession called 'Birthday Top Edgers'. The secret to getting the 'underline' is to place the die just about an eighth of an inch above the straight edge of the piece of card you're using before die cutting the sentiment, which means you don't need to fiddle about afterwards trying to cut the underline itself - glued it onto the white panel using a Zig glue pen

- die cut the bicycle from a snippet of orange card using Sweet Dixie's 'Racing Bike' die and glued it onto the white panel using a Zig glue pen

- layered the white panel onto a green panel using Collall All Purpose Glue, which was cut from another snippet of the same green card and trimmed to the same  width as the card front and about 3.5" in height

- finally added the image panel to the card front using Collall All Purpose Glue then and finished off with three glossy black Josy Rose Hot Fix Nail Heads

The 'Racing Bike' die was much bigger than I expected when it arrived - but it's fun to use and makes a bold statement. Little note to self, check sizes when ordering on line!

  1. Oh I bet he loved it. I always find it difficult judging size as it does always mean the actual finished size sometime the size of the metal.

  2. I remember when we finally let our kids ride their bike to school. It was kinda scary and it wasn't that far. Our oldest rode his to high school with a friend every day for exercise AND so they wouldn't have to ride the bus. Anyway.........I'm sure the 11 year old loved his bike card. It turned out so cute. 4. I'm sure he loved this card. The actual size of things ordered online is often a surprise even when I do check - difficult sometimes to visualise something we read in words and numbers somehow.

  9. A great racing bike die and love the paper too, just perfect for this eleven year old. It isn't easy to visualise exactly what something will look like in the flesh but it works beautifully here Di. x

  11. I've been surprised by the size of a die, so don't feel bad, Di. The large bike is great for male cards as it does make a great statement! Bet the kiddo loved a card with his color bike!

  12. What a fun card for your young neighbor and how fun that he can now ride his bike with this friends to school! I love the kite paper, it is perfect to use along with this bike die. Yes, even with measurements, I still don't always get the gist of how big a die is. lol But measurements do help. Hugs, Brenda

  13. Super bicycle card. Can’t believe that grandson number 2 will be going up to big school next September. He will have two bus rides to do each way as the school is the other side of town and the roads will be main roads to get there. Got to start thinking of a suitable card design for his birthday . Hugs me.

  16. Hello DI, thanks for your comment on my blog, yes, it is my prize die! Fancy you remembering. I have had a lot of enjoyment using it, sometimes as a positive and sometimes as a negative for stencilling.
I like your red bike (and it's size) and thanks for the instructions on the underline.
