Removing 'toppers' from shop bought cards

I mentioned in my Snippets blog post earlier today about how I remove toppers from shop bought Christmas cards when I want to use them for up cycling.

The face-down idea struck a chord with a few of you so I'm really happy if it's of use. Parsnip just nudged me to say there's another bit to the trick I didn't mention - although it's not always necessary.

Before flipping the card front with topper attached face down, it can be a help if you trim around the topper area, leaving enough card to grab with your fingers easily of course. About an inch all round works well. It sometimes helps you to keep the topper firmly pinned to the desk whilst you're peeling the (now smaller than before) remaining backing layer away from the sticky pads.

  1. Just a thought but would it help to use a heat gun on the back of the card - not tried it myself but I wonder if it might melt the glue on the sticky pad a bit? xx

  2. I now also use the 'face down' technique after creasing so many toppers when trying to remove them. Sometimes if the foam pads are very thick and are difficult to remove I carefully use a craft knife to slice through the pad and them remove them from the back of the topper.

  3. Thanks for the helpful hints Di, as it is so frustrating when you ruin a pretty topper that might have made a good bit of upcycling. x

  6. Another thank you from me too, I had a shop birthday card that I quite like the topper of, so used your idea and it worked far better than other times I have tried to remove images that I thought may come in handy.

    Thanks xxx

  7. Hi Di, no worries down under removing toppers from cards, a couple of minutes in a warm sunny spot (usually upside down) and they peel right off. I don't suppose that any of you want to keep your Christmas cards around until your summer time though. Have a wonderful week... Megan

  10. Glad to know I'm not alone in doing this little maneuver, which I now know as "toppers". It's also good to know about the upside down tip. I love challenges that include up/re cycling :-)

  11. Hi, To remove toppers from cards I use a cheap craft knife, the yellow ones that you can extend the blade snapping the blunt piece off. I run the fully extended blade under the topper cutting through the foam pads.
